Soooo, today some animation! Luckily I have saved some roughs from it. Welcome Lilla, who is a 6 years old puppy. She loves autumn, especially how it smells, of dry leaves and misty rain. Lilla is an energetic puppy, but also quite sensible.
First, I started thinking on my idea. This short animation is going to be a part of an Autumn animation JAM we are compositing together with my colleagues from The Animation Workshop in my year of study. We had a color pallet, 48 frames and the theme: Autumn. At the moment my animation is 56 frames, but I know from where to cut it down for the JAM. The reason I made it longer is just because I felt I need some more timing for holds. Usually I think about animation as music or rhythm, that makes it not feel even, and that's nice, of course not in case you like monotone club music rhythm.
Because i knew what I am going for, I started sketching my idea. In the first video, first drawings are already tied down, but others are my roughs. They're the fastest and the most efficient to make in order to portray the emotion, the timing and sometimes the spacing of animation. Of course in the animation bellow there are already breakdowns as well, but usually I start only with keys, sometimes with everything like a kind of straight ahead.
In the second place I do tied down (TD). It is a process which makes you sure that things are working not just because you have rough lines. Sometimes rotary movements work because in rough stage it appears to rotate, but after a tied down you realize your shapes are not connected and consistent. While doing TD I add secondary objects as leaves and their movement. In the end I start thinking about what style of finished look I want.
I have decided to make the line bolder in order to connect them, because otherwise I couldn't paint in TVP. It took me around 1,30 hours to go other my drawings and do a consistent line work in order to make my coloring easier.
Finally after coloring I thought I will add a bit of shadow and texture on top of colors with a color from given pallet.
Here it is the final look of the animation! I hope you enjoy it and maybe you have some questions, I will be glad to answer.
I was very inspired to do a little sculpture of my character Lilla. It is made of water base clay with watercolor coloring. For future animation this will be her color pallet.
